Support Groups - Someone to talk to

  • ADAVIC- Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria   ADAVIC is a non-profit organisation which: runs support groups & social outings,offers telephone support, produces a quarterly newsletter, offers a library of books, videos, tapes & CDs to members, organises public lectures, conducts workshops of interest to anxiety sufferers, offers an Adolescent Anxiety Information Pack, gives referrals to mental health professionals who treat anxiety etc.
  • Assisted Reproductive Technology Support Group  A.R.T. Support Group is the support group for patients undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology at Melbourne IVF and Reproductive Services. It is a non-profit organisation formed and managed by people who have experience of ART and run for the benefit of couples undergoing ART. 
  • The Asthma Foundation Victoria
  • Alcoholics Anonymous Victoria AA is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
  • Aleph Melbourne ALEPH is for Jewish men of all ages who identify as gay, bisexual or just not straight or are experiencing confusion about their sexuality. The groups offers social contact in a relaxed friendly, confidential and anonymous setting.
  • Asperger Syndrome Support Network The support group has information sessions and seminars on Asperger's Syndrome. Persons in the group frequently get together for a chat, a laugh and sometimes a cry about about their family member who has AS in an understanding and supportive environment.

  • Autism Victoria A range of services are offered to individuals and agencies with an interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS.
  • BMDI Breast Cancer Support Group Open to all women with breast cancer and their families, it is one of the longest running breast cancer support groups in Melbourne.
  • The Cancer Council Victoria Supporting people with and at high risk of cancer, and their families and friends aimed at reducing the burden for people affected by cancer.
  • Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) Crisis support, counselling, information for people who have been sexually assaulted as adults or as children. There are Centres Against Sexual Assault in regions across Victoria.
  • Central Bayside Community Health Service Based in the City of Kingston, is a non profit organisation providing a broad range of health and community services to its community of interest. That is, those people who live, work or attend school within the local community.
  • Centre for Adolescent Health
  • The Centre for Adolescent Health is recognised nationally and internationally for its commitment and achievements in advancing young people's health and wellbeing. The Centre responds to the health problems that affect young people between the ages of 10 and 24 years.
  • Cerebral Palsy Support Network  A self-help organisation run by people who have a personal experience with cerebral palsy. It has been set up specifically to provide information, support and resources to children and adults with cerebral palsy and their families in Victoria, Australia.
  • CHIPS (Chronic Illness Peer Support) A chronic illness peer support program, designed for people between the ages of twelve and twenty-five, who live with some form of a chronic illness.
  • Darebin Community Health Service A comprehensive site with a range of responsive primary health and community support services. Skilled health professionals are committed to delivering quality health care and advice to people living, working and studying in the City of Darebin.
  • Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria Telephone Support, Information and Referral service for people with eating disorders and their families and friends. Two separate support groups meet on alternate Monday evenings - one for sufferers, the other for family and friends.
  • Family Drug Help Family Drug Help is a Victorian service for people concerned about a relative or friend using drugs: information, understanding, and support when you need.
  • Gay and Lesbian Switchboard Victoria  Switchboard's service is free, anonymous, and confidential. Our phones are staffed by trained volunteer counsellors who are themselves gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
  • Haemophilia Foundation Victoria Help for those with Haemophilia and associated bleeding disorders. The organisation also aims to help and families, and those affected by blood borne viruses as a result of the use of blood products.
  • Heartbeat Victoria Inc  An Australian voluntary organisation of ex-cardiac patients, relatives and friends.  In appreciation of patients being given a second chance, they all share a common desire to contribute positively toward the support and assistance of other heart patients and their carers. 
  • ISIS Primary Care- Anxiety & Panic Group Works in partnership with local communities in the Western Metropolitan Region of Melbourne to provide responsive, interconnected health and community services.
  • Lifes Little Treasures A Melbourne group of mothers who have experienced the roller coaster ride of premature birth, who would like to provide with support and friendship.
  • Limbs 4 Life Inc Up-to-date information and formalised peer support for Victorian amputees.
  • Melbourne Attachment Parenting A support group for parents practicing attachment parenting, and related gentle parenting techniques. Share support with other like minded parents.
  • Melbourne Herpes Self Help Group The group offers support, information and friendship to others just like themselves with genital herpes. It is a non profit organisation with monthly confidential meetings.
  • Ménière’s Support Group of Victoria (MSGV) Inc The sight offers a range of support services to people with Ménière’s including counselling, referrals, practical advice and member meetings. We also offer support to carers and family members.
  • Men's Referral Service The Men's Referral Service is an anonymous and confidential telephone service provided for men by men. It provides a central point of contact for men who are wanting to stop their violent or abusive behaviour towards their family members, but are not sure how or where to go for advice. Many women also call the Men's Referral Service seeking information and help for their male partner, husband, relative or friend.
  • Mental Health Foundation of Victoria For people living with mental illness, family members, carers and friends, professionals from many fields, mental health service providers and interested members of the general public.
  • Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) provides a range of services for migrants and refugees living in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne such as health, housing and family issues just to mention a few. Services are available to people living in the local governmnent areas of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges.
  • Palliative Care Victoria Representing palliative care providers and those with an interest in palliative care. This website has been developed to provide information about palliative care to health professionals and the community.
  • Panda - Post and Ante Natal Depression Association Inc Provides confidential information, support and referral to anyone affected by post and antenatal mood disorders, including partners and extended family members. PANDA also produces and distributes accurate information about post and antenatal mood disorders to health professionals and the wider community.
  • ParaQuad Victoria Assists people with disabilities to regain, retain and extend their independence by providing a range of individually tailored services that are flexible and responsive to changing needs.
  • Parkinson's Victoria  Advice on a range of areas such as emotional issues for families dealing with the diagnosis, social and health care rights, welfare benefits, driving, insurance, and employment. Calls are welcome from people with Parkinson's, carers and family members.
  • Polio Network Victoria Contains a number of  polio support groups spread across Victorian metropolitan and country areas. Polio Support Groups (PSG's) are established and run by local members. The Polio Network is a free service that provides relevant and accessible information, referral and support services to people who have had Polio, their families, carers and advocates.

  • Road Trauma Support Team Victoria  Provides counselling and support to Victorian families and individuals affected by road trauma.

  • The RWH Gynaecological Cancer Support Group The RWH Gynaecological Cancer Support group is a face-to-face support group which provides information, fellowship, and friendship for women with any gynaecological cancer - i.e. ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulval and vaginal - their carers and friends. Membership is free.
  • Vietnamese Cancer Support G  The Group often named the Sunflower Group helps Vietnamese patients and their families during this difficult period.
  • Western Suburbs Indigenous Gathering Place  An Indigenous Gathering Place has been established at Maribyrnong in Melbourne's Western Suburbs. The centre provides a range of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Melbourne's West.
  • WIRE (Women's Information) WIRE - Women's Information provides free information, support and referrals to women across Victoria. No problem is too big or too small. WIRE services include a phone support service, a walk-in centre, and this comprehensive, searchable website.
  • Youth Substance Abuse Service Alcohol and drug interventions for young people between the ages of 12 - 21 who are experiencing significant problems with their alcohol and/or drug use. YSAS also has a 24hr telephone service throughout Victoria. YSAS line is open to young people, their families, health and welfare workers, police and ambulance workers, and the wider community.

  • Activ Foundation Inc- A not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting a better life by providing a range of choices and opportunities for people with disability and their families living and working in the community.
  • Alternatives to Violence Project  The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a network of independent not-for-profit grass-roots volunteer groups offering experiential workshops on creative conflict transformation in prisons, schools, and the wider community.
  • Amyloidosis Australia Providing support for patient's, families and carer's of those effected by Amyloidosis
  • Anaphylaxis Australia Inc  The sight is dedicated to assisting individuals and their carers in the management of anaphylaxis and provides services to support children and adults living with anaphylaxis.
  • Anxiety Recovery Centre Victoria ARCVic is a specialist, state-wide community support organisation, providing support, recovery, early intervention and educational services to people and families living with anxiety disorders.
  • ARAFMI Mental Health Carers & Friends Association Inc A support organisation for the relatives and friends (carers) of people with a mental health problem. Services include self-help groups for carers, counselling and information, advocacy, youth services and holiday respite.
  • Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia Inc Founded to address the needs and interests of men and women affected by an asbestos related disease. It is made up of victims of asbestos diseases and their families, friends and supporters.
  • Austprem Inc. Support or parents and caregivers of premature infants and children.
  • Australian Action on Pre-clampsia Australian Action on Pre-eclampsia Inc. (AAPEC) is an association incorporated in Victoria. It is a voluntary organisation set up to provide support and information to families who have suffered from pre- eclampsia.
  • Australian Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Support Group Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS), also known as Wolf Syndrome along with Pitt Rogers Danks Syndrome (PRDS), are both rare chromosomal disorders caused by a deletion from the short (p) arm of the fourth chromosome known as 4 p minus (4p-). The organisation is a voluntary not-for-profit self-help organisation dedicated to educating parents about Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and networking them with other parents of affected children.

  • Better Hearing Australia Better Hearing Australia is a non-profit, self-help organisation controlled by its members and provides an Australia-wide community support service of rehabilitation and help for Australia's hearing impaired.
  • Beyond Blue: The National Depression Initiative Provides free information about depression, anxiety and related disorders including drug/alcohol issues through a 24 hour information line and website. Raises awareness and conducts research into treatments for depression.
  • Beyond Shelter - Australia Aims to break the cycle of welfare dependency and to train people to obtain sustainable employment. Provides service-enriched affordable housing for low income people through participation in a self help building own home program.  

  • Bluearth Institute To provide programmes and information about the role of physical activity in healthy living. Also to train teachers in the 'best practice' delivery of physical activity in schools.
  • Bowel Group for Kids  A support network available to parents who had a child with disordered gastrointestinal motility. Membership is open to parents and families affected by Hirschsprung's disease, Ano-Rectal Malformations (Imperforate Anus, Cloacia), and chronic constipation.
  • BPW Clothes Library Assists youth and adults seeking employment by lending clothes to attend job interviews.
  • Broken Rites (Australia) Collective Inc A support group for people who have been abused sexually, physically or emotionally within religious institutions and clergy. Provides support and advocacy for victims throughout the justice and church process.
  • Care Leavers' Australia Network (CLAN) Offers information and support services for people who grew up as state wards, home children and foster children, in Australia's orphanages and children's homes
  • Centrecare Provides free advocacy, counselling and support to families, couples and individuals, as well as training, mediation and employee assistance programs.
  • Child Migrant Trust Assists former child migrants or their family to trace relatives in the UK. The service is only available to those who were brought to Australia under the British Child Migrant Scheme up until 1967.
  • Child Support Agency (CSA) exists to ensure that both parents financially support their children when families separate. Also offers parents a number of support products, services and referrals for parents dealing with financial, emotion and legal issues surrounding separation.
  • CMTAA (Charcot-Marie Tooth Association Australia Inc.) Charcot-Marie Tooth Syndrome (CMT) is a genetic condition of the peripheral nervous system, that affects the sensory and muscle control of nerves in the lower legs and arms. The site promotes contact with other sufferers of CMT.
  • Commonwealth Carelink Centres Provides a central resource for people seeking information about community based services which provide care and support to older adults and people with disabilities.
  • COSHG (Collective Self Help Groups) COSHG is a network of self-help and social action groups. These groups are made up of and controlled by people who are directly affected by a particular issue.
  • CREATE Foundation To improve life opportunities for Australian children and young people from birth to 18 years who do not live with their natural parents and who are in alternative care. Provides programs and services run for, and by, children and young people in care.
  • Cri Du Chat Support Group of Australia Inc  The Cri du Chat Support Group of Australia Inc. is a voluntary group based in Melbourne. They provide support, information and contact to families who have a family member with Cri du Chat syndrome or other abnormality of chromosome five, anywhere in Australia, New Zealand and other countries of the Southern Hemisphere.

  • The Meningitis Centre Australia The Meningitis Centre is a parent-led, national organization offering support services to families who have experienced all forms of meningitis and/or meningococcal or pneumococcal septicaemia.   • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Australia  A sub group of Sleep Disorders Australia, the relatively new organisation aims to provide a chance to network with someone who understands perplexing symptoms of RLS.
  • Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) Deafness and blindness are serious disabilities. RIDBC assists more than 600 children, and their families, each year and relies heavily on community support to be able to continue to make a difference in children's lives.
  • RPlist (Retinal Degeneration Discussion List). An electronic mailing list, i.e. a group of people who use electronic mail (e-mail) on the Internet to exchange ideas and information about Retinal Degeneration. Any e-mail message sent to the list's address is automatically forwarded to all members (subscribers). Anyone with a valid Internet e-mail address can join or leave the group at any time. Participation is entirely free of charge.
