I always have an idyllic notion of Blackheath residents tucking into healthy organic food, or a glass of mulled wine and warming their toes in front of roaring log fires wearing comfy, hand-knitted socks. Perhaps life is not like that for everyone, but temperatures certainly get very cold in winter, and this Blue Mountains village has an alternate lifestyle charm. Creative people live here. There are several galleries in town and an enthusiastic art society. Deciduous foliage produces eye-catching autumn tones. The annual Rhododendron Festival attracts many visitors - the plants thrive in the mountain climate. Interesting shops and cosy cafes are dotted around the town. The Bakehouse on Wentworth serves scrumptious sweet and savoury baked goodies. The Victory Theatre Antique Centre in the town's centre is an absolute treasure-trove. Every inch of the former theatre is jam-packed full of collectibles, bric-a-brac, jewellery and books, all immaculately presented and very tempting. There's a cafe in the front foyer, great for lingering with friends, or admiring a purchase. Minutes away are bushwalks and scenery that revive the senses. Accommodation ranges from cottage B&Bs to motels and hearty meals are served in restaurants and pub bistros at all times of the year. Approximately 120 km to Sydney - Ellis Ash |
