  In summer dine on the old Garrison verandah under the grape vines and in winter dine in one of the small officers' rooms by the cosy fireplace. Walk around the grounds and imagine the times of Governor Phillip and his first buildings here, Governor Hunter and the gardens, farms and orchards at the front of the house and in the crescent behind. Governor Bligh had some serious arguments with John Macarthur on the front portico and Macquarie built the Garrison building around 1815, where we dine today. Lachlan's is set within the historic grounds of Old Government House; the most important National Trust house in Australia and features a sandstone courtyard, old English hedges and a long vine-covered verandah when in season. The elegant silk-lined Garden Marquee features polished native Australian blackbutt timber floor and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Parramatta Park down to the river. The Marquee is fully air-conditioned in summer and is positively cosy warm in winter and seats up to 240 guests. The Garrison Building, which houses Lachlan's Restaurant, lies directly behind Old Government House with views across the main courtyard. The building has four main dining areas, each with its own character. Three of these areas are enclosed rooms which feature original architecture. The fourth, the verandah, features original stone flagging and a grape vine estimated to be 175 years of age, which never fails to produce an abundance of grapes in season.
