The Goldfields
The Goldfields region developed in the mid-19th century from a farming
town to a bustling, productive, multicultural melting pot with the
discovery of gold and the formation of goldmines. The area has kept much
of the Victorian architecture and history, and remains a popular tourist
destination. The main towns of the area are
Bendigo,
Castlemaine,
Ballarat,
Creswick,
Maryborough, Wedderburn
and Charlton.
