Walhalla
Walhalla is situated in the dense mountain country of the
Gippsland
Discovery Region. The town is set in a narrow valley, framed by sheer
cliff face.
Walhalla was one of Victoria's richest gold mining towns until the gold
ran out and the town was virtually abandoned. Just over 2 hours drive from central Melbourne, Walhalla is now popular with
tourists for its historic buildings and dramatic scenery.
Attractions include the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, the Long Tunnel
Extended Goldmine and the hillside cemetery. Nearby is the Baw Baw National Park and in winter ski at either Mt St Gwinear or Mt Baw Baw.
