South Yarra is on the southern side of the Yarra River, 5km from the CBD, featuring mainly terrace houses and art deco apartments. Hawksburn is an affluent area within South Yarra with many old terraces and the Hawksburn Village shopping strip on Malvern Road. South Yarra has many tram and bus services, and two train stations – the South Yarra Railway Station and the Hawksburn Station.
Major roads in South Yarra are the tree-lined St Kilda Road and the busy Punt Road. The shopping precincts, restaurants, cafes, and nightclubs operate mainly along Toorak Road and Chapel Street. South Yarra’s parks include the Royal Botanic Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, Alexandra Gardens, and Fawkner Park. Sporting venues include Olympic Park and Melbourne Park while prominent landmarks include the Jam Factory – which has been converted into a retail and arthouse cinema space – and the Historic Como House and Garden.
