The Sunshine Coast is quieter than the Gold Coast but it still has some major attractions.
Bribie Island is 65km north of Brisbane and has the closest surf beaches to Brisbane. Pumicestone Passage, which separates the island from the mainland, extends from Caloundra in the north to Deception Bay in the south. Buderim is home to the Urban Food Street – a local neighbourhood venture of growing fruit trees, vegetables and herbs on the footpath. Not all were convinced and after a stalemate with their local council, many trees were removed.
Caloundra is 95km north of Brisbane and is a popular coastal holiday spot with a mix of calm and surf beaches.
Cooroy is a pretty town, in the northern Sunshine Coast and Noosa Hinterland, about 20 kilometres west of Noosa Heads. Cooroy is on the Brisbane to Nambour and Gympie railway line.
In the hinterland, 20kms west of Noosa Heads is the town of Eumundi. For most of the week the streets are sleepy, except for Wednesdays and Saturdays, well-known for the Eumundi markets.
Market days are hectic, it’s difficult to find a park, the crowds are huge, but there is always an abundance of entertainment, food, art, craft, jewellery and pretty much anything!
During the rest of the week locals and tourists are kept entertained with rival pubs, Joe’s Waterhole (a well established live music venue) and the Imperial Hotel, both are found on the main street just a few doors away from each other. There are also café’s and boutiques.
Montville, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, is just north of Maleny. It is part of the Blackall Range along with Maleny, Mapleton and Kennilworth. Montville and Maleny overlook the Glass House Mountains National Park and the famous Glasshouse Mountains that were once volcanoes.

Noosa, on the northern section of the Sunshine Coast, is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive north of Brisbane and includes Noosaville, Noosa Junction, Tewantin, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise and the Hinterland.
Main Beach is a protected north facing beach, popular with tourists and locals enjoying surf lessons, long-boarding, swimming and sun-baking. There are many who saunter straight from the surf onto the main street, Hastings St.
Well known for its fashionable restaurants, bars and boutiques, Hastings has just undergone a facelift in order to be more pedestrian friendly.
At the other end of Hastings St is the Noosa National Park. It can be accessed by a boardwalk from Main Beach and has bushwalking trails, some of which lead to more beaches or views.
Away from the bustling tourist town of Noosa Heads, about five or 10 minutes drive south, is the suburb of Sunshine Beach. Once known as Golden Beach, Sunshine is popular with local surfers. Swimmers can also enjoy the safety of swimming between the flags.
Twin Waters (Postcode: 4564) is on the north side of the Maroochy River, opposite Maroochydore.
About ten minutes drive west of Noosa Heads, is the town of Tewantin. Along the main street, Poinciana Avenue, is the information centre Parkyn’s Hut, cafés, shops and Memorial Park.
Poinciana Ave leads to Pelican Street where the Noosa office for the Sunshine Coast Council and the Noosa Regional Gallery are located. Nearby is the Noosa Marina, which has shops, Sunday markets and restaurants. Noosa Marina is also the point of departure or arrival for many fishing and scenic tours of Noosa River.
Tourists and locals can take the cable ferry at the end of Moorindil Street over to Noosa North Shore.
Yandina, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, is just north of Nambour. Yandina is the ‘Ginger Town’ of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and home of The Buderim Ginger Factory which relocated Yandina many years ago.
Yandina is also home to the Yandina Community Gardens, a membership-based community group dedicated to providing education and practical experiences in Permaculture
Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast features a large patrolled beach, which is popular amongst families and surfers.
Coolum is a coastal town between Marcoola (south) and Peregian Beach and Noosa to the north.
It has a magnificent beachfront, flagged surf beaches and views of Mount Coolum. As well as accommodation it has shops, cafes and a long boardwalk with great views.
