Leichhardt is an inner western suburb of Sydney with a vibrant cafe culture. It is about 5km west from Central railway station along Parramatta Road. The surrounding suburbs are Lilyfield to the north, Annandale to the east, Petersham to the south, and Haberfield to the west.
The hub of Leichhardt is Norton Street, which travels north to south through the middle of the suburb, particularly south of the intersection with Marion Street to Parramatta Road. In decades past, many Italian immigrants settled in Leichhardt and the surrounding suburbs, and Norton Street still has a reputation as Sydney’s Little Italy. The Italian Forum, between Norton Street and Balmain Road, is an open-air plaza surrounded by Italian restaurants, shops, and apartments. Nearby is the Palace Cinema Norton Street, plus boutique fashion and bookshops.
Regular bus services run along Parramatta Road and Norton Street. There is a light rail stop in Lilyfield, just outside Leichhardt to the north.
