Windsor is on the Hawkesbury River, at the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Windsor was settled in 1794, the third European settlement in Australia after Sydney Cove and Parramatta. It was renamed Windsor by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810. Windsor is the commercial and administrative centre of the Macquarie Towns.
From Windsor, you can travel west through Richmond and along Bells Line of Road to Lithgow in the Blue Mountains, south-west along the Northern Rd to Penrith, or south-east through Box hill towards Sydney city. Windsor is on the Richmond branch of the Western Line of the CityRail network.
