The Gold Rush from 1850 to 1900 brought many immigrants into the region and forms much of its history. The Goldfields is now a popular tourist destination with many gold related attractions and the preservation of the Victorian architecture. The main towns of the area are Bendigo, Castlemaine, Ballarat, Creswick, Maryborough, Wedderburn and Charlton.
The Victorian Goldfields Railway runs between the historic towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
